Terms & Conditions

1.About Mjengo Challenge

Mjengo Challenge ("we," "us," "our," "the Platform") is a savings platform operated in Tanzania that helps people acquire building materials — cement, iron sheets, gypsum, nondo, and similar — through small, regular contributions instead of one large payment. You can save on your own through a Savings Challenge, or save together with others through a Group. By creating an account, joining a challenge or group, or making a payment on the Platform, you agree to these Terms & Conditions.

2.Eligibility & Your Account

  • You must be able to enter into a binding agreement under Tanzanian law to register.
  • Registration requires accurate personal details, including your National ID (NIDA) number, phone number, and email address. We use this to verify your identity and protect the savings you and other members contribute.
  • You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for all activity under your account. Tell us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access.
  • One account per person. Creating multiple accounts to gain additional queue positions, coupon uses, or promotional benefits is not permitted.

3.Savings Challenges

A Savings Challenge is a fixed-term commitment to contribute a set daily amount toward a target of building materials, alongside a capped number of other participants.

  • Joining: when you join a challenge you're placed in a queue position. The challenge stays in waiting status — no payments are collected — until enough participants have joined to fill it.
  • Activation: once the challenge is full, it becomes active and your first payment becomes due. The challenge's advertised time window is set fresh from the day it actually activates, not from whenever it was first listed, so you always get the full stated duration to complete your payments.
  • Paying ahead: you may pay for more than one day at a time, up to your remaining commitment, to get ahead of schedule. You may not pay less than what's currently due.
  • Leaving: you may leave a challenge before it fills up. Once a challenge is active and you've started paying, contributions already made are treated as a savings commitment toward that challenge — see our Returns Policy for how early-exit requests are handled.

4.Group Saving

A Group lets a set of people, led by one member (the "leader"), pool contributions toward a shared set of materials on an agreed schedule (daily, weekly, or monthly installments).

  • Creating a group: the leader sets the group's size, materials, and payment schedule. New groups require our approval before they become active and receive a coupon code.
  • Joining a group: every join — public or private group — requires the group's coupon code, shared by the leader. Requesting to join with a valid coupon does not make you an active member automatically; the leader reviews and approves each request.
  • Leader responsibilities: the leader is responsible for reviewing join requests, keeping the group's coupon code appropriately shared, and communicating with members. Leaders cannot leave their own group.
  • Installments: once a group is full, its payment schedule locks in and installments become due on the agreed frequency. A member with an overdue installment must clear it before paying the next one in the sequence.
  • Leaving a group: a member may leave before the group's payment schedule has started. Once payments are active, a member cannot leave the group.

5.Payments & Mobile Money

Payments are collected through mobile money — M-Pesa, Airtel Money, TigoPesa, and Halopesa — processed via our payment partner, Selcom. When you initiate a payment, you'll receive a prompt on your phone to confirm it with your mobile money PIN.

  • You are responsible for having sufficient balance in your mobile money wallet before initiating a payment. Payments that fail due to insufficient balance are not charged.
  • A payment that isn't confirmed within a few minutes of being initiated is automatically marked as timed out, and you'll need to try again.
  • All amounts on the Platform are stated in Tanzanian Shillings (TZS).
  • We do not store your mobile money PIN or full account credentials — these are entered directly with your mobile network operator through Selcom's secure prompt.

6.Late Payments & Penalties

Challenges and groups depend on every participant paying on schedule, since group progress and material delivery depend on everyone's contributions. If a payment isn't made by its due date:

  • A penalty may be applied to your account after a short grace period, on top of the installment already due.
  • For challenges, unpaid amounts accumulate as debt calculated from your join date; you can clear accumulated debt with a single payment covering the full outstanding balance plus any penalty.
  • For groups, older overdue installments must be cleared before a newer one, in order.
  • Penalties may be waived at our discretion in cases of genuine payment-system error — contact support with your payment reference to request a review.

7.Material Delivery

Materials are provided once a challenge or group's savings cycle is fully complete — not before, even if you personally finish your own payments early while other participants are still paying.

This is because a challenge or group's material order is placed as one combined purchase once the whole group's target is reached, which is what allows us to offer materials at the price shown. Once your challenge or group is marked complete, we'll contact you using the details on your account to arrange collection or delivery.

8.Direct Purchase & Lipa Kidogo

Outside of Challenges and Groups, materials may also be available for immediate purchase (Direct Purchase) or via a short installment plan (Lipa Kidogo). These follow the pricing, quantity, and installment terms shown at the time of purchase. Lipa Kidogo installments are collected on the schedule agreed at checkout, and materials are released once the plan is paid in full unless stated otherwise on the order.

9.Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Provide false identity, payment, or contact information.
  • Share, sell, or misuse a group's coupon code for purposes unrelated to genuine membership.
  • Attempt to interfere with, reverse-engineer, or disrupt the Platform or its payment processing.
  • Use the Platform for any unlawful purpose under Tanzanian law.

10.Suspension & Termination

We may suspend or close an account that violates these Terms, provides fraudulent identity or payment information, or is used for abusive conduct toward other members or staff. Where reasonably possible, we'll explain the reason and give you a chance to respond before final action is taken.

11.Limitation of Liability

We work to keep the Platform, its payment integrations, and its schedules accurate and reliable, but we don't guarantee uninterrupted service — mobile money networks, material suppliers, and third-party payment processing are outside our direct control. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from service interruptions, delays from third-party payment providers, or delays in material availability from suppliers.

12.Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time as the Platform's features evolve. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date above, and significant changes affecting active challenges or groups will be communicated to affected members through the Platform's notifications.

13.Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United Republic of Tanzania. Any disputes arising from your use of the Platform will first be addressed through our support channels before any other resolution process.
